SS Great Britain launched in 1843 and at the time she was the largest vessel afloat. She is 98 m in length and was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Great Western Steamship Company's transatlantic service between Bristol and New York City.

SS Great Britain is a former passenger steamship and was the first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic Ocean in 14 days in 1845. Unfortunately her high building cost and funds spent refloating the ship after a navigation error left her owners in a difficult financial position and they were forced out of business in 1846.

In 1852 she was sold for salvage and repaired. SS Great Britain carried thousands of immigrants to Australia from 1852 and up to 1881. In 1884 she was retired to the Falkland Islands and in 1937 she was scuttled – 98 years after being laid down.

In 1970, Sir Jack Arnold Hayward OBE (1923–2015) paid for the vessel to be raised and repaired enough to be towed north through the Atlantic back to the United Kingdom, and returned to the Bristol dry dock where she had been built 127 years earlier.

SS Great Britain is a museum ship in Bristol Harbour which attracts thousands of visitors every year. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit
