The original Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship was built in 1847 in Quebec, Canada, as a cargo ship. She made her maiden voyage from Blennerville, Co. Kerry in Ireland, to Quebec in 1848 with 193 passengers on board. However, during her life span, she also carried desperate families fleeing the Famine in Ireland. She transported 2,500 Irish emigrants on 16 transatlantic voyages to North America.
The Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship moored at Customs House Quay in Dublin is an authentic replica of the original ship. She was built at Blennerville, Co. Kerry, in Ireland – a job that took 6 years and was completed in 2002.
The re-creation of the Jeanie Johnston ship was one of the most ambitious maritime heritage projects undertaken in Ireland. The project was modelled closely on the restoration of the 17th century Dutch ship, the Batavia.
The Jeanie Johnston Tall Ship replica has sailed all around Ireland and Europe, as well as visiting several American ports like Washington DC, New York, Boston, Baltimore and Philadelphia. She has been moored in Dublin since 2008.
