The Battle of Lowestoft was a naval battle fought between the English and Dutch fleets on 13 June 1665 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The English fleet, under the command of James, Duke of York (later King James II), was attempting to prevent a Dutch blockade of English ports and protect English trade routes.
The Dutch fleet, under the command of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, was attempting to engage the English fleet and gain control of the English Channel. The battle began when the Dutch fleet attacked the English fleet off the coast of Lowestoft, a town in Suffolk, England.
Despite being outnumbered, the English fleet fought fiercely and was ultimately able to defeat the Dutch fleet. The English captured or sank around 20 Dutch ships, while suffering only minor losses themselves. The battle was a significant victory for the English and helped to establish their naval dominance over the Dutch in the years to come.
The Battle of Lowestoft was also notable for being one of the first major battles fought by the newly formed Royal Navy, which had been established after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
