Australia is a famous racing yacht that represented Australia in the 1983 America's Cup, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious sailing races in the world.
Designed by Ben Lexcen, Australia was a revolutionary yacht that featured a unique winged keel design, which gave it superior speed and manoeuvrability compared to its competitors. This design caused controversy and legal challenges from other teams, but ultimately it was allowed to compete.
Australia's skipper, John Bertrand, led the team to a historic victory in the 1983 America's Cup, defeating the American yacht Liberty in a dramatic and closely contested series of races. The victory ended the New York Yacht Club's 132-year winning streak in the America's Cup, and it was a moment of great pride and celebration for Australia.
Today, Australia is considered a national treasure and an important part of Australia's sailing history. The yacht is currently on display at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney, where visitors can learn more about its design and racing history.
