Bismarck was a German battleship of World War II that had a short life at sea. She was named after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck.
Bismarck was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships built for Nazi Germany’s Kriegsmarine - German Navy of the 1935-1945 period. She was launched in 1939 and commissioned into the German fleet in August 1940. Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz were the largest battleships ever built by Germany, and two of the largest built by any European power.
Captain Ernst Lindemann was the only commanding officer in her short eight-month career. During World War II, she conducted only one offensive operation that lasted 8 days.HMS Prince of Wales engaged Bismarck at the Battle of the Denmark Strait in May 1941. Bismarck suffered sufficient damage during the battle and headed to occupied France for repairs. However, she was attacked by 16 swordfish biplane torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal. The next day, crippled Bismarck was engaged by two British battleships and two heavy cruisers and suffered exceptional damage and heavy loss of life.
The Bismarck finally capsized and sank on 27th May 1941.
