HMS Hermione (F58) was a Leander-class frigate of the Royal Navy. The Leander-class frigates were a class of general-purpose frigates built for the Royal Navy during the post-World War II period.
HMS Hermione (F58) was commissioned into the Royal Navy on July 11, 1969. It was built by Alexander Stephen and Sons and completed by Yarrow Shipbuilders.
Leander-class frigates were designed for anti-submarine warfare and general escort duties. They served as versatile vessels with a focus on anti-submarine capabilities.
The Leander-class frigates, including HMS Hermione, had a displacement of around 2,500 tons.
These frigates were armed with anti-submarine torpedoes, anti-aircraft missiles, and various guns. The specific armament could vary over time due to upgrades and modifications.
HMS Hermione had a service career that spanned several decades. Leander-class frigates were active during the Cold War era and were deployed in various roles, including escort duties, anti-submarine warfare, and patrol operations.
In January 1980, Hermione’s modernisation programme included the addition of the Sea Wolf missile and the Exocet anti-ship missile, which forced the removal of Hermione's twin 4.5 in guns. The modernisation was completed in 1983 at Chatham Naval Dockyard, and Hermione was the last ship to leave when the dockyard closed. Hermione then joined the 8th Frigate Squadron. She saw service in the Middle East during the Iran–Iraq War. In 1992, Hermione was decommissioned and in 1997 she was sold to India for scrap.
