The Gorch Fock II is a German navy tall ship that was built in 1958 as a replacement for the original Gorch Fock, which was seized by the Soviet Union as war reparations after World War II. The ship was named after the German author and poet Johann Kinau, who wrote under the pen name Gorch Fock.
The Gorch Fock II has been used as a training vessel for the German navy since it was commissioned in 1958. The ship has also participated in various international tall ship events and races, and has visited many ports around the world.
In 2008, the Gorch Fock II was involved in a scandal when a cadet fell to her death while the ship was docked in Brazil. An investigation found that there were serious safety deficiencies on board the ship, and the incident sparked a controversy in Germany over the safety of the country's naval training program.
In 2010, the Gorch Fock II was temporarily taken out of service for a major overhaul and renovation. The project was beset by delays and cost overruns, and the ship did not return to service until 2015. Since then, the Gorch Fock II has continued to serve as a training vessel for the German navy, and has participated in various international tall ship events.
