The bireme was a type of ancient ship that was commonly used by various Mediterranean civilizations, including the Greeks, Phoenicians, and Romans. As the name suggests, the bireme had two rows of oars on each side, with each row of oars being manned by one or more oarsmen.

The bireme was typically longer and narrower than other types of ancient ships, which made it faster. It was also used as a warship, and could be equipped with a ram at the bow for ramming enemy ships during naval battles.

The bireme was widely used from the 6th century BC until the 4th century AD, when it was gradually replaced by other types of ships with larger and more powerful engines, such as the trireme and the quinquereme.

Despite its relatively short lifespan, the bireme played an important role in the naval history of the ancient Mediterranean world, and its design and construction influenced the development of later ships throughout history.
