HMS Surprise played a key role in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, which was one of the most famous naval battles in history. Under the command of Captain Charles Inglis, HMS Surprise was part of Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood column, which was the second column in the British line of battle.
During the battle, HMS Surprise engaged several French and Spanish ships, including the Spanish frigate Santa Teresa and the French ship Aigle. The ship sustained significant damage, including several shot holes in her hull and masts, and several casualties among her crew. Despite this, HMS Surprise managed to hold her position in the line of battle and continue to engage the enemy.
HMS Surprise bravery and tenacity in the Battle of Trafalgar were widely recognized and praised by her fellow sailors and officers. Today, the ship is remembered as a symbol of the courage and skill of the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars.
I purchased HMS Surprise as a ‘companion model’ to my HMS Agamemnon. Again, I can only reiterate my delight with the quality and craftsmanship and for the level of skill & detail that’s gone in to producing this equally outstanding model. Indeed, I understand that Surprise figurehead and the motif on her stern have both been hand-carved!
