The Queen Elizabeth-class carriers represent a significant capability enhancement for the Royal Navy, providing the ability to deploy a versatile mix of fixed-wing aircraft, including the F-35B Lightning II.
HMS Queen Elizabeth was commissioned into the Royal Navy on December 7, 2017.
The construction of the Queen Elizabeth-class carriers involved various shipyards, including BAE Systems and Babcock, and it represents the largest warship ever built for the Royal Navy.
HMS Queen Elizabeth has a length of approximately 280 meters (920 feet) and a displacement of around 65,000 tons. The aircraft carrier has a flight deck that is 70 meters wide and 280 meters long, providing ample space for the operation of fixed-wing aircraft.
HMS Queen Elizabeth is designed to carry a variety of aircraft, with its primary focus being on the F-35B Lightning II, a fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter. The carrier is capable of supporting a mix of rotary-wing aircraft, including helicopters for various roles such as anti-submarine warfare, airborne early warning, and transport.
The carrier is powered by two Rolls-Royce Marine Trent MT30 gas turbines and four Wärtsilä diesel generators, providing a high level of flexibility and efficiency.
HMS Queen Elizabeth is a versatile platform designed for power projection, air superiority, and maritime strike capabilities. It is intended to serve as a flagship, leading a Carrier Strike Group, and it enhances the Royal Navy's ability to project power and influence globally.
HMS Prince of Wales (R09) is the sister ship of HMS Queen Elizabeth, and both carriers are part of the Royal Navy's strategic capability.
