The No. 617 squadron also known as the “Dambusters” was based at RAF Scampton in North Lincolnshire consisting of Avro Lancaster heavy precision bombers. The squadron was created for the specific task of attacking three major dams that contributed water and power to the Ruhr industrial region in Germany the Möhne, Eder, and Sorpe. The mission for the dam attacks was given the codename Operation Chastise and carried out on 17 May 1943. The squadron had to undergo specific training to drop the famous bouncing bombs specifically designed for the mission. The training took place over the Derwent reservoir in Derbyshire.

Throughout the war, the squadron undertook specialist and precision-bombing of Nazi Germany’s strategic targets. New bombs were developed for various missions, namely the "Tallboy" and "Grand Slam" designed to penetrate the ground. The No. 617 squadron targeted the concrete U-boat shelters and bridges. Several attempts were made on The Dortmund-Ems Canal for Operation Garlic during which the dam was breached using the Tallboy heavy bomb.

The No. 617 squadron undertook mission Catechism which disabled and sank the Tirpitz (sister ship to the Bismarck). The German battleship was stationed into a Norwegian fjord where she threatened the Arctic convoys during the later part of the war. The mission was codenamed Operation Catechism and consisted of 32 Lancaster bombers equipped with Tallboy heavy bombs. The Tirpitz was hit by several heavy bombs and sank due to the heavy damage sustained. The mission was a great success without any reported British casualties.
