Amerigo Vespucci Model Ship

Amerigo Vespucci Model Ship


The Amerigo Vespucci is a famous tall ship of the Italian Navy. The Amerigo Vespucci was built in 1930 in Castellammare di Stabia (Naples) and was launched on February 22, 1931. The hull of the Amerigo Vespucci is painted black with two white stripes but does not carry any guns. The stern and bow are elaborately decorated with very intricate ornaments. The figurehead is a statue of Amerigo Vespucci.

The Batavia was a ship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). She was built in Amsterdam in 1628 and had 24 cast-iron cannons. The Batavia was shipwrecked on her maiden voyage, and made famous by the subsequent mutiny and massacre that took place among the survivors. A twentieth-century replica of the ship is also called the Batavia and can be visited in Lelystad, the Netherlands.

The Belem was delivered to her ship owners in 1896. She was specially created to transport cocoa and sugar from Brazil and the West Indies to Nantes, France. The boat was sold to the Duke of Westminster in 1914 and in 1921 she was bought by the Irish brewer Ernest Guinness. Following the death of Ernest Guinness (1939) and the Second World War, the Belem was laid up in the island of Wight.

The Belle Poule was launched in 1834. Her design was inspired by the USS Constitution cruiser class. The Belle Poule displayed very good sailing properties. In 1841, the Belle Poule cruised along the Canadian coast, landing in Halifax, and visited New York, where the Prince of Joinville visited the President of the USA. In 1844, the Belle Poule cruised the Indian Ocean, where a cyclone left her with serious damage.

This type of ship had diminished capacity but was faster than other previous ships employed in the slave trade. The Cutty Sark was built by Scott and Lindon and launched on 22nd November 1869, at Dumbarton, Scotland. The Cutty Sark made her maiden voyage in January 1870. Between 1870 and 1877 she carried mainly tea but was never able to win the tea race. Her design and speed were well suited to the rough seas of the Southern Hemisphere and between 1885 and 1895 she was untouchable.

The schooner Etoile and her sister ship Belle Poule were built in the shipyard of Fécamp, France in 1932. They served as cod fishing vessels off the coast of Iceland until 1938. The season was approximately seven months. During this time the ships mostly operated in depression area with heavy weather. They were built stout and sturdy and for that reason were selected later on as navy training ships.

She was built in 1911 at the yards ("Chantiers et Ateliers de la Gironde") located on the banks of the river Garonne in Bordeaux to the plans of chief designer Gustave Leverne (1861-1940) for the nickel trade and was owned by the "Société Anonyme des Navires Mixtes (Prentout-Leblond, Leroux & Cie.)". She was an extremely large tall ship of 5,633 GRT and square-rigged as a five-masted steel-hulled barque.

In 1672, sided by 77 vessels under De Ruyter’s command, on board of the admiral-ship Zeven  Provincen, it took part in the battle of Solebay with the allied Anglo-French forces.

In 1579, off the coast of Ecuador, the Golden Hind captured the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. This galleon made the largest capture to date: Six tonnes of gold. On 26 September 1580, Francis Drake reached Plymouth Harbour with only 56 of the original crew of 80 left aboard. Queen Elizabeth 1st went aboard the Golden Hind and bestowed a knighthood on Sir Francis Drake.

The Bounty was purchased by the Admiralty and recommissioned in 1787. She was transporting goods to the West Indies when a dramatic mutiny was led by Fletcher Christian against the infamous Captain Bligh. After completion of the trip, Bligh was forced into the launch with 18 of his loyal supporters. Fletcher navigated the long boat 3,600 miles and settled for the next 25 years on Pitcairn Island.

She is remembered as being Nelson's favourite ship and was named after the mythical ancient Greek king Agamemnon, being the first ship of the Royal Navy to bear the name. The future Lord Nelson served as Agamemnon's captain from January 1793 for 3 years and 3 months.

The HMS Bellona was a 74-gun third-rate used in the Napoleonic wars and was launched in 1760. She was used in the American Revolutionary War after she had been coppered. Until 1783, she served in the North Sea and the West Indies. In 1801, HMS Bellona served under Nelson in the Battle of Copenhagen. She also served in the North Sea and Bay of Biscay until 1814.

The big moment in her lifetime was the audacious cutting out of the frigate Hermione in 1799. Part of her story was dramatized by Patrick O'Brian and depicted in the movie Master and Commander.

The HMS Victory became famous when in October of 1805, she served under Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson during the battle of Trafalgar.She carried 104 guns at Trafalgar and was manned by a crew of 821 ready for battle and sworn to defend King and Country at any cost. In 1812 the Victory was retired from frontline duty and anchored in Portsmouth Harbour.

Surcouf led a brilliant campaign which resulted in the capture of nine British ships. In October 1800, in the Bay of Bengal, La Confiance met the 38-gun Kent and, despite being outnumbered three to one, the French seized control of the Kent and became a living legend in France.

The Canot Imperiale is extensively and richly decorated and was built in Antwerp in 21 days. In 1692, Soleil Royal was hauled up onto the beach at Cherbourg for repairs. At port, it was a defenceless target for the Dutch and British attack on June 2nd and 3rd. The loss of the Soleil Royal together with 18 others was the most serious naval setback for France in the 17th century.

The Sovereign of the Seas was the most magnificent ship of her era. Designed in 1630's by Phineas Pett, she was the first ship to have three full gun decks, carrying 102 guns on the orders of King Charles I. No expense was spared in her construction. Renamed the Royal Sovereign when Charles II came to the throne in 1660, she fought in several battles during the Second and Third Dutch Wars between 1666 and 1673.

Wappen von Hamburg was built in Hamburg in the Deich-tor shipyard and the sailing ship was launched in 1669. Its main purpose was to serve as an escort vessel on voyages to the spit Bergen. In October 1683, she was the victim of a fire which broke out on board which spread to the ship and attained the ship's reserve of gunpowder causing the ship to explode.

The three-masted royal ship launched in 1627. Length 70.00 m, breadth 11,50 m, draught 4,80 m, displacement 1,400 tons, sail area 1,150 m2, with a crew of 133 sailors and 300 soldiers. On its maiden voyage in 1628, the Wasa capsized and sank in the Stockholm harbour. The ship itself was lifted from the sea on 24th April 1961, and the Wasa Museum was opened the following year.
