HM Bark Endeavour Ship's History The HM Bark Endeavour was formerly a collier called the Earl of Pembroke. She was renamed HM Bark Endeavor and underwent a major re-fit at Deptford on the Thames in 1768. The Endeavour sailed to South America and then Australia with aim to search and take possession of the southern continent. The HM Bark Endeavour was used to map the southern continents and also to catalogue the variety of abundant wildlife encountered in Australia. Her Captain for the voyage was a forty year-old experienced seaman by the name of Captain James Cook. Captain Cook was born in Yorkshire in 1728 and worked as a merchant seaman in the coal trade before joining the Royal Navy in 1755. This ship model is a very detailed and accurate representation of Captain Cook's Endeavour.
Note: The Endeavour is often wrongly referred to as the HMS Endeavour. The historically correct name is the HM Bark Endeavour. |
