HMS SURPRISE 1794
History of the HMS Surprise Royal Navy Frigate Historic Sailing Ship
HMS Surprise appears in the writings of Patrick OBrian. In his extensive work the author depicts the adventures of fictional characters Captain Aubrey and the surgeon Maturin. However the true history of the HMS Surprise is not fully known. What is known about this frigate is that she was built in in 1794 at Le Havre (France) as LUnite destined for the French navy. The HMS Surprise was a 24-gun frigate, carrying with 8lb guns as firepower. The HMS Surprise was captured by the Royal Navy in April 1796 in the Mediterranean. She was then refitted and renamed as the HMS Surprise. Having been re-fitted, she was also re-armed with 28-guns. It was recognized at that time that French frigates possessed high manoeuvrability. This made them the target of the Royal Navy. The HMS Surprise possessed a streamlined hull profile below the waterline. The HMS Surprise frigate carried twenty four 32 lb carronades on the main deck, eight 32 lb carronades on the quarter deck, and four 6 lb long guns on the foredeck. In October 1799 under Captain Edward Hamilton , the HMS Surprise rescued frigate Hermoine which was restored to the Royal Navy.
